Can I fit a replacement rack myself? DIY vs professional fitting explained

The short answer is no and here are the reasons why.

Safety

Many steering components require access to the underside of the vehicle during installation. For this to be done safely would require a two or four post lift. We would not recommend using a car jack.

Equipment

Modern vehicles with electric steering require specialist equipment for successful installation. The correct diagnostic equipment is needed to identify the problem and complete the installation. Most components require some basis calibration when installed, this can only be done with diagnostic equipment. Some vehicles require bespoke tools to install components without causing damage.

Knowledge

Electric steering systems have some very delicate components which need to be handled and installed with care. For instance, if the component has a torque sensor fitted, the slightest impact can cause problems with the calibration. The use of heavy tools during installation would normally lead to the unit failing.

Failure to install the component correctly would lead to early failure and may invalidate the warranty.
