What is remanufacturing and how does it compare to reconditioning?

When your power steering fails, you’re often faced with a choice: buy a brand-new part or a remanufactured component.

But what do these terms actually mean? And which option offers the best value and reliability?

In this post, we break down the differences between remanufacturing and reconditioning and explain why remanufactured steering components are often the smartest, most dependable choice.

Let’s start with the basics: what does “remanufactured” mean?

Remanufacturing is the process of taking a used steering component, such as a rack, pump or column, and restoring it to original equipment (OE) standards. Here at Northcastle, that means the part is stripped down completely, cleaned and inspected, any components found to be outside our stringent quality standards are replaced. It is then rigorously tested to standards often far beyond those used by the original equipment manufacturer.

This isn’t a quick fix or patch-up job. Our remanufactured parts are intended to perform just like a brand-new unit, often with software updates, upgraded seals and bearings, and enhanced testing that ensures reliability well beyond the conditions typically seen on the road.

How is that different from “reconditioning”?

A reconditioned part is usually one that has been cleaned up, repaired, and put back into service, but hasn’t necessarily been fully dismantled or rebuilt to OE specifications.

In many cases, only the faulty element e.g. a worn bush or ball joint is replaced with low quality parts, and the rest of the unit is left as-is. While this might restore short-term function, it doesn’t guarantee the same performance, reliability or longevity as a fully remanufactured part.

In short:

Reconditioned = a working fix

Remanufactured = a full restoration of the component and extensive testing

Why not just buy a brand-new part?

In some cases, buying brand-new can make sense. Particularly for newer vehicles under warranty or where a remanufactured part isn’t available. But new OE steering components can be significantly more expensive and often come with long lead times from dealerships.

With a properly remanufactured unit, you get the same performance and reliability at a fraction of the cost and you’re not compromising on quality or warranty coverage.

Why garages choose remanufactured over new or reconditioned

Thousands of garages, dealerships and mechanics across the UK rely on remanufactured parts. Not just because they cost less but because they’re a trusted, proven solution.

Our steering components are rebuilt to match manufacturer specifications, tested far beyond normal operating conditions, and fitted with fresh electronics and mechanical parts. The result? A part that fits first time, performs reliably and gets your customer back on the road with confidence.

It’s the sustainable choice, too

Remanufacturing also reduces waste. By reusing the core units and restoring it to a high standard, we prevent thousands of tonnes of usable metal and materials from going to landfill. It’s a win-win: good for your vehicle, good for your wallet and better for the planet.

In summary:
